Factories are regulated by the Factories Act, 1948.

Factory is type of premises,
1) – Where ten or more workers are working or were working on any day of preceding twelve months, and in any part of which, a manufacturing or construction process is being carried on with the help of the power, or is ordinarily so carried on.
2) – Where twenty or more workers or working on any day of preceding twelve months, and in any part of which a manufacturing process is being carried on with the help of the power, or is ordinarily so carried on, but does not include:
- Mines subject to the operation of the Mines Act, 1952.
- A mobile unit subjected to the armed forces of the union.
- Railway running rooms or a hotel, restaurant or eating place.
